Chika is a Japanese restaurant that features some non-traditional dishes that clearly show Western influences (what they call yoshoku), such as the maguro carpaccio - thin, buttery slices of tuna with a light citrus sauce and grilled duck breast brushed with miso. They also do the "basics" quite well - their sushi and sashimi is of very high quality and elegantly presented. The space and ambiance are a little odd, but the restaurant is quiet and intimate. They're open for lunch 11:45 am to 2:45 pm and dinner from 6:00 pm to 11:30 pm, Mon, Wed-Sat. Sundays, they're open from 11:45 am to 9:30 pm, and they're closed Tuesdays. (As are all good Japanese restaurants in San Mateo.)
