| About Zoka Coffee Roaster & Tea Company, Seattle, WA: "One of the few coffee houses in the Wallingford/Greenlake neighborhoods that is actually open late (midnight every day; I believe it opens at 6 or 6:30), which is odd, since plenty of UW students live around here. Mochas are good, and don't require my usual admonishment to go easy on the chocolate. They also make a good vanilla milkshake, with hard (not soft) ice cream." | 07-11-2007 | |
| About Irwin's, Seattle, WA: "Cookies for my dog, and apple turnovers to die for! Irwin's is just a couple of blocks from my new house, so it's a morning stop almost every day for a mocha and sometimes whatever tempts me from the bakery case. I find the apple turnovers fantastic. I've also enjoyed berry pies, and the blueberry muffins. I haven't ventured much beyond that limited selection, but that's enough for me. The people are nice, starting to learn my drink, and there's a mug full o' cookies for Shrimpy. Open early mornings to early evening, with some evening hours (until 8) Tues - Sat." | 06-28-2007 | |
| About Tutta Bella Neapolitan Pizzeria, Seattle, WA: "(Apparently) Authentic Neapolitan Pizza. Evidently, the Neapolitan pizza association (in Napoli, Italy) must certify a restaurant if it can truly be called "Neapolitan," and this is the only place in the Pacific NW to get it. I've only made it once since moving here a few months ago, but it left quite an impression. I had a white pizza, with roasted garlic, roasted onion, and goat cheese, and it was outstanding. The crust is thin, soft, but with a crunch to it. Entirely satisfying. " | 06-25-2007 | |
| About Boulangerie, Seattle, WA: "Disappointing, of late. This used to be one of a few great French bakeries in Seattle, but since I moved to the neighborhood a few months ago, I've been disappointed. Once I was there mid-morning on a Friday, and it was mysteriously closed. Twice I've gone in on a Sunday morning, and ended up with bread and pastries that tasted day-old (but weren't advertised or priced as such). I guess I need to try it on, say, a Wednesday morning, but if they're not baking on Sunday (which they haven't announced or posted), they really shouldn't be open. " | 06-25-2007 | |
About Queen Mary Tea Room and Restaurant, Seattle, WA: "Homemade cakes and desserts, tea information and loose tea sales, and excellent food either in "high tea" or a la carte lunch form. Also: I will never forget Adam being too self-conscious to order the Princess Cake (angel food with strawberries baked in), and trying to blame it on Michelle. Can't blame him, though. There was a party of little girls having Princess Cake and wearing tiaras just a couple of weeks later. They will give you a tiara if you go for your birthday, though. Queen Mary definitely is a pretty girly place, but the food knows no gender restrictions. I always eat a fruit plate and drink Irish Breakfast with lots of milk. In my more carnivorous days, I ate their fab turkey sandwich with chevre cheese and green apples. They can customize the high-tea sandwich selection to accommodate your food situation. It's pretty much all reservation at this point, so call ahead or reserve online, because you can't count on walking in." | 06-25-2007 | |
| About Rusty Pelican Cafe, Seattle, WA: "Breakfast all day! Crowded at weekend brunch times, but generally just a satisfying bunch of sort of diner-like food. More upscale than a diner though. Maybe it's really just a family restaurant? With a liquor license. Whatever: I had a Northwest Skillet and a margarita for dinner the other night, and it hit the spot. My mom says the bloody mary tasted homemade, and I can attest there were enough veggies in it to call that a salad." | 06-25-2007 | |
| About Julia's in Wallingford, Seattle, WA: "Always satisfying. Fish and chips are as I like them (panko breaded), and there are plenty of vegetarian options as well. The Juila's in Ballard used to be up and down in terms of quality, which may be why it is no more, but this one seems consistently solid. I don't find the bakery too exciting, especially with several other options for baked goods in the neighborhood." | 06-25-2007 | |
